Upton Hellions, Crediton, Mid-Devon
St Mary the Virgin
Grade 1
2m N of Crediton
Set in beautiful countryside only two miles north of Crediton but giving a great sense of tranquillity and remoteness. Its lych-gate was erected in 1894 and has an original Norman doorway and font. There is a huge variety on things to see at this church, covering a whole range of periods and is an absolute must to visit, not only for its contents but its great sense of peace. Look out however for the intricate stained-glass window, 17th century alabaster priedieu, unusual zodiac tiles behind the altar and ancient roof bosses in nave wagon roof.
